The Army ASI, or Additional Skill Identifier, is a code that represents a specific skill or qualification that a soldier possesses in addition to their primary military occupational specialty (MOS).
An ASI is a code or special training a soldier has completed in addition to their MOS training.

Army Additional Skill Identifier
Some ASIs, such as ear, nose, and throat doctors, are specific to your army mos. Others are generic, such as Air Assault and Pathfinder (Airborne is an Army SQI).
- Units are generally authorized army ASIs based on their modified table of equipment (MTOE).
- For a specific soldier, army ASIs are authorized based on the line and paragraph number.
In the National Guard, it depends on how aggressively your unit wants to pursue available slots in your brigade.
- For example, my slot is associated with a highly technical ASI. However, my organization has several air assault slots available that I may or may not take advantage of.
Most Army ASIs require soldiers to attend incomplete, specific military training. Other ASIs can be satisfied by highly technical civilian training.

One thing that I advise you on is not to chase ASI schools for bragging rights or a badge. Instead, do it because you want to bring additional skills back to your unit.
Note:Not all ASI schools have a badge associated with them, and not all badges are associated with an ASI. A good example would be theCombat Action Badgeand theCombat Infantry Badge.
Difference Between Army ASI and Army SQI
To show the difference between Army ASI and Army SQI, I will illustrate it with the example below:
Soldier A
- Soldier A is in the infantry, with his specific MOS being “11B Infantryman.”
- Soldier A goes to Airborne School and earns the “P” Army SQI,ParachutistSpecial Qualification Identifier, meaning they qualify as parachutists.
- Soldier A earns the Parachutist Army SQI, aspecific qualificationbeyond his primary MOS (1B Infantryman). He can therefore do parachute jumps as part of his infantry duties.
Soldier B
- Soldier B also has the same primary MOS as Soldier A, an 11 Bravo Infantryman. Additionally, he attends sniper school and earns the “BA,”SniperArmy ASI.
- This means that Soldier B has anadditionalskill beyond his primary MOS. Soldier B can therefore perform sniper duties in addition to his infantry duties.
Army ASIs and SQIs indicate that soldiers possess specialized skills or qualifications beyond their primary MOS. SQIs refer to specific qualifications, and army ASIs refer to additional skills or training.
