What Type of Camping Are You Preparing For?

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (2)

Now before we delve into our list of camping essentials, we need to establish what kind of camping you’re preparing for. Because as you can imagine, the supplies needed for each will differ slightly.

So, are you planning on car camping or bush camping?

Car Camping

Car camping is available only where you can park your car which is usually in designated camping grounds. For this kind of camping, you wouldn’t generally need a tent or other wilderness supplies.

When car camping you also have access to a power source (the car) so you wouldn’t necessarily need the additional lights or chargers.

Bush Camping

However, with bush camping (generally in a tent or swag) you are limited only by how far your legs can take you! You can camp in designated camping grounds or remote locations that are only reached via a walking track. This kind of camping would require more supplies.

The focus of this post is primarily tent camping, but you can use this list to build your car camping essentials too.

With that said, let’s check out the main items recommended for a great camping experience:

Camping Essentials List

Shelter

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (4)

Camping comfort starts with shelter. Finding the right tent can make all the difference in your camping experience.

If you’re not going for super lightweight backpacking, consider a 3-person tent because it offers more space. This allows you to change comfortably or even bring a friend or significant other.

Keep in mind that tent sizes can be a bit snug. A 1-person tent might feel cramped (although it’s great for solo backpacking). A 2-person tent can get cozy if you don’t mind being close to your camping partner.

You’ll also need to consider cost, whether the tent is waterproof, has an outer layer (for extra weather protection), is easy to assemble and has a tough base that isn’t prone to tearing.

In our experience, the cheaper the tent, the lower the quality, but with that said, there are still some fantastic affordable tents out there.

We have chosen the top 2 tents for each size (1 person, 2 person & 3 person tents). You’ll notice that we have chosen a top-of-the-range tent with all the mod-cons, along with a mid-range tent for affordability.

Just remember: If you choose the right tent to begin with, that best suits your needs, you are far more likely to enjoy your camping experience.

Sleep System

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (5)

There are a couple of things to consider when putting together your sleeping system and these include your sleeping bag, sleeping mat and pillow.

Sleeping Bag

Toss in a sleeping bag, and you’re almost 90% packed for your camping trip – that’s how important it is!

Your sleep system is key when getting a good night’s rest during camping. That’s why choosing the right sleeping bag for your needs is essential!

Some things to consider:

👉 Are you car camping or bush camping?

If you’re bush camping, it makes sense that your sleeping bag should be lightweight. You don’t want to be lugging around a bulky sleeping bag on a multi-day hike.

However, if you’re car camping, you can afford the luxury of a thicker sleeping bag such as the Adventure Kings Premium Sleeping Bag.

We personally love car camping and use the Adventure King Premium Sleeping Bag. Most of our travels are done in winter and on one occasion we camped in -7 degree weather and stayed very cosy all night.

👉 What season are you camping in?

For the ultimate sleeping arrangements, we recommend investing in a sleeping bag that can handle at least -5 degrees Celsius. This ensures that you stay warm in cold conditions.

👉 Do you prefer a snug fit or a relaxed-fitting sleeping bag?

Some sleeping bags are a snug fit (mummy shaped) designed to keep your body heat pressed against you for extra warmth.

While relaxed sleeping bags give you more moving room.

👉 Do you prefer a natural down sleeping bag or a synthetic sleeping bag?

Although down sleeping bags are a more natural option, there are several advantages to using a synthetic sleeping bag.

One of the main advantages of synthetic is that it absorbs significantly less water than down sleeping bags.

This means they exhibit greater resistance to moisture but also dry quicker if they do get wet. It also means they can be significantly lighter than lugging a wet down sleeping bag around.

Another advantage to synthetic sleeping bags is they are easier to clean.

👉 What’s your budget?

Once you’ve considered the above questions, it’s time to look at your price range.

If you’re an occasional camper, it’s not necessary to spend big bucks on a you-beaut sleeping bag.

However, if you plan on making camping a regular part of your outdoor activities, then we definitely recommend investing in a high-quality bag.

Sleeping Mat

It’s also important to ensure you have something to separate you from the ground – it makes a world of difference.

A sleeping mat is handy even in warm weather, as morning dew can wet your sleeping bag. Not to mention a sleeping mat provides an extra layer of cushioning between you and any lumpy ground.

The great news is there are plenty of thermal sleeping mats out now that provide a layer of comfort, insulation and moisture protection between you and the ground.

Pillow

Although not essential, a camping pillow makes an excellent addition to any kit. Thankfully nowadays you can find a comfy pillow that isn’t bulky to carry.

Cooker Setup

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (8)

A stove is a game-changer when it comes to cooking in the wild. Cooking over a campfire may be charming, but having a stove makes preparing coffee, tea, or breakfast a breeze.

A 2-burner propane or butane stove is common for car camping, while backpacking calls for a smaller canister, alcohol stove, or white gas.

But there are many options to suit your needs and camping style – from Coleman cookstove variations for a larger setup to compact WhisperLite stoves that efficiently boil water for freeze-dried meals.

You can decide what works best for you.

Consider investing in a petrol stove if you’re into car camping frequently. It’s cost-effective, widely available, and eliminates the litter produced by butane/propane canisters.

These stoves burn hotter, allowing you to use larger cookware, such as cast iron, and easily cook proper meals.

Kitchen Kit / Supplies

Building your camping kitchen is about personal preference – it can be as simple or complex as you like.

If you’re a solo hiker, we recommend a kitchen kit containing a dishpan, saucepan (if not included with cooker) 2 plates, 2 cups, 2 bowls, cutlery, a sharp knife, a small cutting board, tea towel, a fireproof griddle, and handy extendable skewers. Oh… And don’t forget your trusty can opener – it will always come in handy!

When it comes to meals, the choice is yours. For a quick and easy option, go for sandwiches, hot dogs, beef jerky, trail mix, and protein bars & fruit.

But if you want something extra special, indulge in steaks, pre-cooked stew, or breakfast wraps that will make your camping experience memorable.

After you’ve eaten, your dishpan will make light work of your dishes to keep things tidy.

With your camping kitchen kit ready, enjoy delicious and delightful meals outdoors!

Illumination Devices

Having the right light devices is crucial in your camping essentials kit. Ensure you pack a headlamp, small LED lanterns, and a handy pocket flashlight.

Whether you need to find your way in the dark or add some ambience to your campsite, these lighting essentials have you covered.

Don’t forget about backup power – bring extra batteries for your light devices to keep them shining bright throughout your camping trip.

And when it comes to safety and convenience, matches or a fire starter are must-haves. They can be used for warmth or as signals for help if needed.

TIP: Keep matches or lighters in resealable plastic bags to protect them from the elements and stay dry and ready when needed.

Water

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (11)

When it comes to outdoor adventures, water is your best friend, protecting you from dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

To stay prepared, opt for a lightweight, unbreakable thermal bottle with a secure lid. These are great for keeping your water cool while hiking, but you can also use it as a flask for coffee after boiling your water.

If you’re car camping you can even take a 10 Litre water dispenser for refilling your water bottle, cooking and cleaning up.

While backpacking, consider bringing 2-litre containers and a LifeStraw to ensure a steady supply of safe drinking water.

To add a touch of convenience, consider a Jetboil or similar device. It’s the ultimate companion, staying right in your tent with you. With this nifty tool, you can swiftly boil water for a revitalizing morning coffee or a warm beverage to kickstart your day.

Plus, it’s a lifesaver during bad weather, allowing you to cook indoors and enjoy delicious meals.

Knife / Multitool

A trusty pocketknife or multitool is a game-changer in the wilderness – a reliable companion for countless situations. This versatile tool has your back, from building an emergency shelter to sparking a campfire with less-than-ideal fuel.

It’s just as handy for the little things, like fixing a damaged backpack on the go. Remember, to make the most of your tool, keep it sharp and clean, ready to take on any adventure that comes your way!

First Aid Kit

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (13)

A first-aid kit is like having a superhero by your side – it can save lives, literally! You’ll be equipped to handle scratches, blisters, and minor injuries with a few essential items.

Plus, it’s vital for providing initial care while awaiting help for more serious incidents.

And when navigating the wilderness, remember your map and compass. If you find yourself lost, they are your ultimate allies, guiding you back to safety.

Stay prepared, stay safe – and let your camping adventure be a worry-free wonderland!

Power Bank

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (14)

It’s vital to have spare batteries and a portable power bank with multiple outlets to recharge your phone or any other devices while out camping. Because not only are they great for charging your phone or earbuds, but the last thing you want is your camera to go flat when you’re in a breathtaking landscape.

Oh and very importantly: DON’T FORGET THE CABLES FOR YOUR PORTABLE CHARGER! That would be an absolute bummer getting to your campsite and realising you left them behind.

Extra Clothing

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (15)

Be prepared for any weather you might encounter. Multiple layers are your best friends, offering adaptability to changing temperatures – much better than one bulky jacket.

Just be careful when adding your layers to avoid cotton where possible, as it doesn’t handle moisture well.

Never underestimate the importance of rain gear – it can save the day when unexpected downpours strike. Getting drenched is uncomfortable and can also lead to hypothermia, a serious threat to your well-being.

To stay warm during chilly nights, consider investing in BASE layers (thermal underwear) – you only need one of each, and they pack down small while working wonders to keep you cozy.

And remember sun protection! Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from those UV rays.

Hygiene Supplies

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (16)

It’s easy to forget about hygiene when you’re camping. But here are just a few easy things you can do to stay fresh out in the wilderness.

Rinse-free Wilderness Wipes – designed for convenience and perfect for a clean feeling before bed.

Compawipes Toilet Paper Tablets Compressed Towels – Compawipes are a great alternative to lugging around bulky toilet paper and they are 100% cotton, fully biodegradable and chemical-free.

Sea To Summit Trek & Travel Pocket Soaps – If you’re looking for pocket-sized, biodegradable shampoo, hand soap, laundry soap, body wash or shaving soap, Sea to Summit has you covered.

Toothbrush & Toothpaste – Travel toothbrushes are an excellent alternative to general toothbrushes as they are foldable meaning they take up less room in your kit and toothpaste tablets are a great space-saving alternative to a toothpaste tube.

Backpack

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (17)

And to fit all this equipment in comfortably, don’t forget the value of a high-quality multi-day backpack.

At a glance, your backpack should be no less than 55 Litres with adequate support for your back. It should include a rain cover, be lightweight, and have ample storage compartments, loops and daisy chains for clipping things to the outside of the bag. That’s just to name a few essentials.

But the important thing is, if you have the right backpack with good support and weight distribution, it will make carrying your kit far less cumbersome.

Note To First-Time Campers

Camping Essentials - Everything You Need For Your Next Overnight Hiking Adventure 2024 (18)

If you’re new to camping, the key is to start simple and build up your camping essentials as you go. No need to attempt remote backcountry adventures or extravagant meals right away.

Begin with a basic tent, munch on granola bars or instant oatmeal for breakfast, have sandwiches for lunch, and savour hot dogs over the fire for dinner.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, consider adding a stove for some variety – remember to bring a can opener, the camper’s best friend!

When choosing your campsite, choose a national park close to a town. This way, you can easily buy anything you forget and escape to a coffee shop if the weather gets rough.

Make sure to take your time with comfort! Invest in a quality tent, a cozy sleep system, warm gear like base layers, a sweatshirt, raincoat, beanie and gloves to keep you warm on those cooler nights. Trust us; it’s worth it for a better night’s sleep.

But just remember: Mistakes are part of the adventure – embrace them with a sense of humour. Learn from your experiences, update your camping essentials packing list, and be gracious to your fellow campers, even when goof-ups happen.

Items You Won’t Find On Any Camping Essentials List That Makes Camping 100x Better

Bring along a nifty foldable side table – it’s not just for snacks but also doubles as a cozy footrest by the fire. For added comfort, place a foam knee pad at your tent entrance – perfect for easing in and out of the tent without the stress on your knees.

Don’t forget your trusty pocket bellows – the secret to hassle-free fire starting!

Save time while cooking with prepped ingredients or freeze-friendly meals like stews, spaghetti, or chilis. Pack them frozen and thaw them for a quick, delicious dinner. Prep and freeze large meals for all – less dirty dishes, less work, less time – all positives for camping!

Welding gloves are a must-have for cooking on a fire. They make adjusting the grill height, rearranging the coals, and even shutting off a white gas lantern a breeze. They might sound a little unusual, but they can lessen your risk of being burnt!

Keep your tent tidy with a dustpan and whisk broom, which is great for clearing debris and fanning the fire.

Lightload towels are a game-changer for hiking. They serve multiple purposes, so it’s a great idea to keep two on your trips – one for your cook kit and the other to wipe down before bed and keep your sleeping area clean.

Doormats in your tent make a difference, especially in sandy or rainy places. No more acrobatics to keep your socks dry and clean when putting on shoes.

Invest in running socks – the super thin/summer-weight ones. They wick away moisture better than wool, ensuring your feet stay comfortable. You can layer wool socks over them for added warmth.

A battery-powered fan is a lifesaver to beat the heat in the summer.

And don’t forget the fun – board and card games are underrated camping companions!

With these smart hacks and camping essentials gear, your camping adventure will be a breeze, and you’ll have even more reasons to cherish your time outdoors!

Camping Essentials Conclusion

So although there are a myriad of camping items available today, we hope that this list shows you don’t have to have everything on the market to make your trip comfortable.

Just make sure (before you hit the road), that you have these must-have camping essentials: A trusty tent, cozy sleeping bag/mat, water bottle, a small cooking kit, food, fire starter, pocket knife, first aid kit, power bank/spare batteries, a handy flashlight and weather-appropriate clothing (rain gear, warm clothes, shorts, hat/sunglasses). Simple and vital!

Don’t stress over the extras – as you get into the groove of camping you can accumulate the additional supplies as you go.

With that in mind, go out there, embrace the adventure, learn from the journey, and most importantly, have a safe and unforgettable trip!
