Black Cat Melt and Pour Soap Recipe

This recipe is super easy when starting with a melt and pour soap base. I chose a white goats milk soap base to start because I like the way milk soaps don't dry out the skin.

What is Black Soap Made Of?

The black stuff in your soap is activated charcoal powder, but it isn't your average charcoal briquet. Created by heating materials such as: bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum co*ke, coal, olive pits or sawdust at really high temperatures. The high temps actually change the internal structure of the materials creating a charcoal that is more porous. {HealthLine}

It sounds weird to have black soap, toothpaste, and face wash, but it's ALL OVER the place these days. And for good reason.

Activated charcoal, because of its porosity, is found to absorb toxins in the body, skin, and hair. Not to mention assisting the digestive tract.

The capsule version work well for melt and pour soap recipes to contain the mess. Only upcap what you need to use, leaving the bottle available to aid in treating heartburn or bloating later!

What is Melt and Pour Soap

Melt and pour soap recipes are popular because they are so easy to work with. Melt and pour soap bases are ready made where the oils and the lye have already been turned into soap for you. This process is called “saponification” and is the chemical reaction needed to create soap. It's also messy and lye can be dangerous for a beginner.

So the melt and pour soaps offer an easy option for beginners and advanced soap makers alike. You just cut the soap into chunks, add colorants, fragrances, and any additional herbs or visual mix-ins then pour into your mold and let it harden.

Super easy right?

Once your melt and pour soap base is cut up into chunks, add your colorant {activated charcoal in this case}, fragrance {essential oils of lavender and peppermint}, and additional items for visual appeal {ultra fine glitter}.

The glitter adds a little visual appeal to the soaps and won't harm your skin BUT please don't add glitter to soap meant for the face. We do not want glitter ending up in the eyes. This melt and pour soap recipe is perfect for a hand soap.

If you'd like to use it for the face, simply omit the glitter.

Add everything together in the bowl and melt. It is possible to add the colorant and fragrances after it's melted but the soap begins to harden immediately and I found it much easier to to start with all the ingredients together.

Melt and Pour Soaps in Microwave

I used the microwave to melt my soap, and it works just fine. Simply heat it in 30-60 second bursts, stirring between until you have a nice pourable consistency.

If you are making a large batch, I recommend using a pot on the stove at low heat, or double broiler to keep the soap in a liquid form. The microwaved soap base melts quickly, then hardens just as quickly.

Halloween Soap Mold

Now that your melted soup is ready to pour you'll need a good mold. I highly recommend using silicone molds as they are so much easier to remove, leaving perfect little soap kittens behind.

This cat mold is perfect for Halloween soap, but you can find candy and ice cube molds of all designs that will work great! Sadly my mold is no longer available but here are few others I considered:

Or something entirely different for your Halloween soap:

Finishing Spray

VERY IMPORTANT!

After you pour your melted soap base into the mold, make sure to spray it with 99% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol to take the bubbles out of the top and give you a smooth professional appearance. I keep a Small Spray bottle in my craft supplies for occasions such as this.

After you let the melt and pour soaps cool for at least 30 minutes you can pop them out of the mold and they are ready for gifting. Aren't they just purrrrr-fect for those little witches and wizards?

Kids love getting dirty to stay clean!
