UPPER ROARING FORK-ASPEN DOWNSTREAM TO BASALT

FLOW:1600cfs

WATER CLARITY:Blown-out. Clarity improves slightly in the afternoon/evening.

OVERALL RATING:2out of 10

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT:Caddis, Golden Stoneflies, Blue Winged Olives,Midges, Sculpins

THE LOWDOWN:For the time being, we will be experiencing our annual run-off conditions. To get an idea of how fast flows are increasing, they have doubled since our last report three days ago.

Fish can still be picked off on the banks using large attractor flies -- think Rubber Legs and bead heads. Cold water from snowmelt tends to slow down the hatches.

MIDDLE ROARING FORK- BASALTDOWNSTREAM TO CARBONDALE

FLOW: 2800cfsinBasalt

WATER CONDITIONS:Clarity is way down, especially in the earlier half of the day. Visibility in the afternoons may increase to a foot or two.

OVERALL RATING:1 out of 10

FOODSOURCES PRESENT:Blue Winged Olives,Midges, Caddis, Stoneflies, Sculpins

THE LOWDOWN:Fishing will be tough going this time of year with drastically elevated water levels and reduced clarity. If you choose to try your hand in this stretch, stick to the banks and wade carefully. Flows will be affected by the bumpson the Fryingpan through Saturday.

There's not a lot of public access mid-river, but local favorites are Catherine Store, behind Crown Mountain Park, and the section along Two Rivers Road here in Basalt.

LOWER ROARING FORK-CARBONDALE DOWNSTREAM TO GLENWOOD

FLOW:5300cfsin Glenwood Springs andstill rising

WATER CONDITIONS:The Crystal is starting to spike with the warm ups, and the lower Fork is getting dirty. We will see flows yo-yo a bit now that we are warming up.

OVERALL RATING:1 out of 10

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT:Golden Stones,Blue Winged Olives, Caddis,Midges, Sculpins

THE LOW DOWN:Our annual run-off is here and should subside in the next few weeks. Though the water is very high, Caddis are still coming off later in the evening when the temperatures begin to turn and the clarity improves slightly.

Like everywhere else on the Fork, the fish should be hanging out on the banks, which is good news because wading can be extremely dangerous with current conditions. Be careful out there!

Streamers are usually effective on the lower Fork, we'd suggest smaller flies and natural colors for the most part. Keys tarpon eat size 8 flies, so don't feel like you have to throw a 3/0 double articulated fly to be "streamer fishing."
